Everything is Getting Turbo'd!!! 😭😭😭

Since the inception of this blog, I have always concluded with the words, "always remember to Turbo that engine" and it seems these car companies have been listening, because almost all of them have been shifting from naturally aspirated vehicles to forced induction, with turbos being the go to. I know that I should be happy, as I have always preached the gospel of "turbocharging" engines, but it is getting out of hand and these car companies are not doing so on their own accord.

To serve as a recap, a turbo is a forced induction device that is used to increase oxygen capacity in an internal combustion engine, to enhance better fuel combustion and hence, produce more power. Japanese cars have always been synonymous with turbos, unlike their European and American counterparts who believed in naturally aspirated V8's, V10's and the spice of them all, Ferrari V12's. The Japanese believe in efficiency, which is making the most from the little they have, so they slapped on turbos to their small 4 cylinder and V6 engines to make just as much power as their European and American competition.

For context, the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser comes with a 2.4L turbocharged engine, the new 2024 Mercedes S-class sedan comes with either a 3.0L inline-six-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo 4.0L V8, the 2024 Ford Mustang comes with a turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost engine and last but not least, the new 2024 Ferrari 296GTB and 296GTS both come from the factory with a mid-mounted 3.0L twin-turbo 120° V6 engine! These are only four examples out of the many new turbo engine vehicles being produced. I mean, a whole Ferrari that is like a synonym for V12 engine, is now succumbing to the pressure!

WHY ARE THESE COMPANIES TURBOCHARGING THEIR VEHICLES?

1. Legislations against Combustion Engines

European member states have formally approved a new law requiring that all new car and vans sold in Europe must be zero-emission by 2035. More so, 12 US states also plan to ban gas-powered cars by 2035. With the United States backing Europe on this, you realize that they are not bluffing. Owing to these rules, most car companies are already adapting to the incoming change, hence the ratio of their combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles is almost 1:1. In order to keep the combustion engines in production, these car companies are switching from gas guzzling V8's and V10's to more fuel economical and efficient 4 cylinder or V6 engines, but adding turbos to make much more power.

2. Influence of Electric Vehicles

All thanks to Uncle Elon Musk and co, electric vehicles have saturated the market and with most car companies recording higher sales of their electric vehicles compared to their gas powered vehicles, it makes common sense to spend less money on combustion engine development and throw more money towards making more efficient electric vehicles. Based on this, a turbo charged V6 will cost less to produce than a V12 engine, so why not mass produce the turbocharged engine and put it into their fleet of combustion engine vehicles.

The World is slowly turning away from gas powered vehicles and the only way to save them is by making them more efficient, which involves turbocharging. It is a beautiful thing to have more turbocharged vehicles on the road, but I wish it was not a decision made out of pressure from the legislators. Having more turbocharged engines, simply shows that combustion engines in general, are slowly being bullied out of existence and this makes me very sad. At this rate, my son may never get to hear the orchestra produced by a combustion engine 😪

A naturally aspirated V12 engine!

Thank you very much for clicking on the link and reading up to this point. This is where I would normally say "always remember to Turbo that engine", but not today! Y'all should instead, beg Ferrari to please stop this twin turbo V6 nonsense that they are doing. I might not like Ferrari, but I want to own one with a V12 someday 👉🏾👈🏾
