The Mercedes Benz for Nigerian Roads

When I saw the text message in the image above, I felt good because it meant that people are beginning to see the light. Coincidentally, I have been contemplating writing about the Mercedes Benz GLC because it is my Dad's favorite car at the moment. He has been in love with the GLC since he first read about it and this made me develop a similar interest in the car. My Dad has superb taste when it comes to cars, so trust me when I say the GLC is the most reasonable Mercedes Benz you can buy as a Nigerian living in Nigeria. (NOTE: I will advice you to check out the blogpost "Understanding Mercedes Benz SUV's" before diving into this weeks post)

2016/2017 Mercedes Benz GLC

The Mercedes Benz GLC was introduced in 2015 for the 2016 model year to replace the GLK. Quite a lot of us are familiar with the GLK (mini G-wagon) which is common among Nigerian Big Boys. The GLK is a good car and it sold well in the market but it lacked that modern look of midsize SUV's it was competing with. So it was replaced with the GLC which looks less boxy, cute and with a beautiful interior appealing more to the female population. If there was a beauty pageant held for all 2016/17 midsize SUV's, the GLC would definitely steal the show and if you think it's beauty is just skin deep, wait until you see what is under the hood.

So, why is the GLC the preferred Mercedes Benz for Nigerian Roads;

1. It's size is perfect (meaning that Nigerian police will not disturb you too much)

Compared to the massive GLE and GLS class, the GLC is very compact. It is on the same size range as it's Japanese competition, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, which makes it a good alternative. It is the perfect SUV for a small family such that it can sit 3 kids comfortably in the rear. More so, for a young bachelor using this car, the policemen will not disturb you regularly because it does not stand out as much on the road. It also doesn’t look so expensive but do not be deceived, it is a good lowkey vehicle.

The Winner Size Wise

2. It has good ground clearance for Nigerian bad roads

In Nigeria, even if you live in Banana Island, you will still need to visit a friend or family member on the mainland. This is why almost every Island big boy who owns a sport car also has an SUV for mainland runs. I remember my Dad not liking the Toyota Venza because for an SUV it is quite low and can not handle rough terrain. However, the GLC gives you the best of both worlds being sleek, luxurious and still able to conquer off road.

Off-road Capabilities

3. It has good fuel economy

With the present situation of Nigeria, fuel prices are hiking and it is bad financial decision to buy a car that chops fuel. The GLC comes in a variant of engine options ranging from 4 cylinder turbo engines to biturbo V6 engines and these engines are all geared towards fuel efficiency as the driver can choose between different modes such as the eco mode for better fuel economy or the sport mode which is not so gas guzzling in it's own right. Newer 2023 models are hybrid which means there are electric motors which reduce fuel consumption and increase power output.

The GLC has a fuel tank capacity of 66 litres, with fuel price at about 600 naira per litre, it means that it would cost about 40 thousand naira for a full tank of gas but that is more than enough for about 3 weeks of driving within town. The Mercedes Benz GLC is the best midsize SUV straight out of 2016/17 model year and it has progressively gotten better over time with the 2023 model having a lot more innovative and safety features.

I really do not see how anyone can go wrong purchasing a Mercedes Benz GLC. Thank you for reading and always remember to Turbo that engine.
