Common Car Nicknames in Nigeria
Nigerians absolutely love giving nicknames. For example you tell a Nigerian that your name is Lawrence and they start calling you "Law Law" or ''Mr Law''. Some nicknames are so absurd that it makes you wonder what the individual was going through to have given such a name. In reality, most of these nicknames actually come about to enable Nigerians easily identify and distinguish different car brands. These nicknames are more common among Toyota and Honda, as they are the most abundant on the road with a lot of different generations of each car model. Let us dive right in!
1. Pencil Light
This is the 4th generation of the Toyota Camry which was produced from 1997 - 2001. The nickname of this car is quite obvious as it has very slim headlights as well as brake lights that somewhat look like pencils.

2. Big Daddy or Big For Nothing
This is the 5th generation of the Toyota Camry which was produced from 2002 - 2006. I really do not understand the reason for this nickname but I guess it is because the car tends to occupy a lot of space on the road.

3. Camry Muscle
This is the 6th generation of the Toyota Camry which was produced from 2007 - 2011. This car literally looks like it hits the gym at least 3 days in a week because of it’s wide body styling.
This is the 9th generation of the Toyota Corolla which was produced from 2003 - 2009. This car gets it's nickname from the fact that it is very common and quite cheap like pure water. I remember using Uber on a particular day and the three different times I ordered for a ride, this same car in white color was my designated ride. But do not be deceived, this car is not as cheap as they make you believe. The so called pure water costs upwards of 2 million naira for a Nigerian used.
This is the 6th generation of the Honda Accord which was produced from 1998 - 2002. This is another car nickname that I do not fully understand but I guess it is because the car looks cute like a bouncing baby boy.

6. End of Discussion
This is the 7th generation of the Honda Accord which was produced from 2003 - 2005. I remember when this car came out, all the big boys were driving it. I guess when people bought it, all their haters shut up, hence the name end of discussion.

7. Discussion Continues
The Honda discussion continues is the same 7th generation of the Honda Accord produced from 2006 - 2007, but this model had a facelift or should I say butt implant. The difference between the Honda End of Discussion and Discussion continues was based on the rear or brake lights. Try to notice the difference between the picture above and this one below.

8. Evil Spirit
This is the 8th generation of the Honda Accord which was produced from 2008 - 2012. This is definitely my favorite Accord design because the car looks wicked and scary on the road, probably why it’s called evil spirit.

10. Jeep
In Nigeria, anything that is bigger than a regular sedan is referred to as a Jeep but this is wrong, because Jeep is a car company or brand of it's own. The right word for the so called ''Jeeps'' is Sport Utility Vehicle or simply put, SUV. I can not have my Turbo Nerdz referring to SUV's as Jeeps, so please take note of this correction!
SUV's, not Jeeps |
There are more cars with funny and sometimes weird nicknames but these are the common ones. If there are any that you think I missed, please add them in the comment section, let us make this episode an interactive one. Thank you for reading and always remember to Turbo that engine!
