THE EWU

I remember posting a picture of Sir Lewis Hamilton and one of my guys was asking if he was like the G.O.A.T of F1? In all honesty, I was very disgusted by this question but then I realized very few people are interested in motorsports, let alone knowing who the 7th time World Champion of Formula One (F1) was. On the other hand, ask anyone who the G.O.A.T of football is and you would immediately be met with an obvious answer. Hence, I have decided that the next few episodes will be on Formula One (F1) and we will kick off by talking about the Ewu of F1. Ewu is an Igbo word which means goat, so catch my drift.

Sir Lewis Hamilton

Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton was born on the 7th of January 1985. He is a British racing driver currently competing in Formula One (F1), driving for Mercedes. Not to brag but he is currently the only black F1 driver and yet he dominates a white mans sport. Most would say that Hamilton was born to race because he has always been good at it. At the age of five, his father Anthony Hamilton bought him a radio-controlled car. For a kid, Hamilton was very focused and skillful because he consistently defeated his competition which comprised of older kids, teens and even adults. He won his first two trophies while racing "toy" cars and I guess that unleashed in him a will to conquer.

At age six, Hamilton's father bought him a go-kart for Christmas. To support his son, Hamilton's father left his job as an IT manager and became a contractor, sometimes working up to four jobs at a time in order to meet up with the demands of racing as he wasn't under sponsorship. Being the only black child racing at his club, Hamilton was subjected to racist abuse. I guess the white folks couldn't just accept that a black dude came from nowhere and was destroying them at their own game. Hamilton began karting in 1993 and quickly began to win races. Two years later, he became the youngest driver to win the British cadet karting championship at the age of ten.

He eventually picked 44 as his racing number and uses it till date

I am a firm believer in fate and Hamilton more or less spoke his future into existence. In 1995 at the age of ten, Hamilton approached McLaren Formula One team boss Ron Dennis at the Autosport Awards for an autograph and said, "Hi, I'm Lewis Hamilton. I won the British Championship and one day I want to be racing your cars." Dennis wrote in Hamilton's autograph book, "Phone me in nine years, we'll sort something out then." To cut the long story short, Hamilton did eventually race for the McLaren Formula One team before moving to Mercedes Benz. Just like Hamilton, I have a message for BBC Top Gear, "I am going to be a host on your show”. I will now leave the Universe to do it's thing.

Born to Race

My friend Hasler gave me the idea of doing a series instead of random topic discussions every week, so I am giving it a go. For the next couple weeks, we will be looking at Formula One as a whole, from the sport itself to the people who make up the sport. See you next week, when we shall conclude on Sir Lewis Hamilton, the G.O.A.T of Formula One.

Thank you for reading and always remember to Turbo that engine!
